Inspectors rated 66 Bromley borough food businesses in July 2026: 64 took the top score of 5 and two cafes took a 4. Not one fell below 'good'. The full list, linked.

Food safety inspectors rated 66 food businesses across the borough of Bromley in July, and not one of them scored below “good”. 64 premises took the top rating of 5, “very good”, and the only two exceptions, Betty’s on Plaistow Lane in Bromley and the Perfect Cafe in Mottingham, each took a 4. The figures come from the FSA’s public register, which records every rating given under the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Ratings dated July 2026 for the Bromley local authority area were retrieved from the register on 7 August; the council adds results as it publishes them, so a handful of late July inspections may still appear.

The two that missed top marks, narrowly

A 4 still means “good” on the FSA’s scale, and both July 4s were close to the top score. At Betty’s, the cafe at 32 Plaistow Lane rated on 1 July, inspectors judged hygienic food handling “very good”, with the condition of the building and the management of food safety both marked “generally satisfactory”. At the Perfect Cafe on Beaconsfield Parade in Mottingham, also rated 1 July, food handling and the state of the premises were judged “good”, with management “generally satisfactory”.

Every business has a formal right of appeal against its rating, a right to reply that is published alongside the score, and a right to request a revisit for a new rating once any issues are put right. Neither register entry carries a reply at the time of writing.

Who got top marks

The fives run right across the borough. In Bromley town centre, Saucy Bird at 198 High Street and the Stonehenge Cafe at number 161 were both rated 5 on 16 July, with the Italian restaurant Don Giovanni on Homesdale Road following on 24 July.

The borough’s pubs had a clean month. The Piglet at Ye Olde Whyte Lyon on Farnborough Common, the Daylight Inn in Petts Wood’s Station Square, the Black Horse on Crofton Road in Orpington, The Railway in West Wickham and the bars at Old Wilsonians Sports Club in Hayes and David Lloyd Beckenham all scored 5, as did the Crafty Bok on Bourne Way, Hayes.

Inspectors also worked through premises feeding children and older residents, all rated 5: Coloma Court Nursing Home in West Wickham, Pemberley Manor Care Home in Orpington and the hospice St Christopher’s Bromley at Caritas House, Orpington, alongside Southborough Primary School, Wickham Common Primary School and a run of nurseries including Rainbow Day Nursery on Langdon Road, Little Cherubs in Shortlands, Pink Elephants at Chislehurst Sports and Country Club and both Ladybird nurseries in Penge.

Penge and Anerley’s parade did well too: Leaf and Grain and the Try Me Jamaican Takeaway on Penge High Street and Cafe Chic on Anerley Road all took fives, as did the Hayes Community Foodbank on Pickhurst Lane and, in one of the register’s more distinctive entries, the Tea Pot Cafe at the Naturist Foundation in Orpington.

How the borough scores overall

July’s clean sheet is better than the borough’s standing average. Across all 2,469 food establishments on Bromley’s register, 1,680 currently hold a 5 and 295 hold a 4; 156 sit on a 3, 13 on a 2, and 15 businesses currently hold a 1, “major improvement necessary”. Two premises hold the lowest score of 0: the register lists Bromley Common Social and Athletic Club on Great Elms Road, rated in June 2025, and Penge Cash & Carry on Maple Road, rated in January 2026. A low score does not mean a business has been closed; it means inspectors required improvements, and the businesses concerned can seek a fresh inspection, appeal, or publish a reply on the register once work is done.

Before you order from somewhere new, the register is free to check: search any Bromley business by name or postcode at ratings.food.gov.uk. July’s results show a 5 is the norm here, so a lower score is worth a second look, but check the inspection date on the entry; an old low score may already have been fixed, and a revisit may be pending.
