Bromley Council plans to swap the taxi rank outside 168-170 Orpington High Street for parking and a motorbike bay, and add ranks at Chelsfield and Widmore Road.

Bromley Council wants to remove the taxi rank on Orpington High Street. The rank outside Nos. 168 and 170 would become a pay-by-phone parking bay and a motorcycle bay. Two new taxi ranks would open elsewhere, one at Chelsfield station and one on Widmore Road in Bromley town centre.

The changes are part of a traffic order notice the council published on 28 October. It also adds double yellow lines at more than a dozen places in the south and east of the borough. Anyone can object until 25 November 2026 (London Borough of Bromley notice, Public Notice Portal).

What would change on Orpington High Street

The rank sits on the north-west side of the High Street. Under the proposal its space would be split in two:

Space Length Use Hours
Outside No. 170 5.9 metres Pay-by-phone parking, 2 hours maximum, no return within 1 hour Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, except public and bank holidays
Outside No. 168 5 metres Solo motorcycle parking At any time

The notice does not say why the rank is going. The council’s statement of reasons can be read at its offices (see below).

The two new taxi ranks

  • Chelsfield station: two pay-and-display bays on Station Approach, opposite Nos. 12 and 13, would become an 11-metre taxi rank at any time. The bays currently charge Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6.30pm.
  • Widmore Road, Bromley: a 25-metre stretch on the north-west side, from Nos. 29 and 31, would become a taxi rank from midnight to 5am, Monday to Friday. At other times it would stay as it is now, a waiting restriction from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.

New yellow lines

New no-waiting-at-any-time lines would go in at these junctions:

  • St Mary Cray: Augustine Road at Sandpiper Way, the end of May Avenue, and Sandway Road at Montbretia Close
  • St Paul’s Cray: Batchwood Green, Walsingham Road at Broom Avenue, and Leesons Hill at Marlings Park Avenue
  • Farnborough: Gladstone Road at its junctions with Cobden Road, Pitt Road, Palmerston Road and Peel Road
  • Orpington: Northfield Avenue at Haydens Close
  • Chislehurst: Invicta Close and the Stanley Glynn Court access road, and Marlings Park Avenue at Orpington Road

Three more changes are in the same notice:

  • Croft Avenue, West Wickham: the yellow lines near Station Road, now 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, would apply at all times.
  • Warren Road, Chelsfield: a new 24.2-metre stretch near Orlestone Gardens with no waiting 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, plus a short at-any-time section.
  • Petts Wood Road: the permit holders’ bay opposite Nos. 213 and 215 would be extended by 0.3 metres.

What it means for you

  • If you take a cab from Orpington High Street, this is the rank that would go. The notice does not say whether another rank in Orpington town centre would take its place.
  • If you park on the High Street, you gain one short-stay bay with a two-hour limit. Parking charges and car parks are on our parking in Bromley page.
  • If you live on one of the junctions listed, parking on the corner would no longer be allowed at any time once the order is made.
