The A21 is shut northbound at Homesdale Road after a burst water main and a sinkhole. Six bus routes are diverted; TfL lists the closure to 2 November.
The A21 Masons Hill is closed northbound at the Homesdale Road junction after a water main burst under the road early this morning.
Transport for London’s record of the closure says the road is shut northbound and down to one lane southbound “due to a burst water main at this location”. It was logged at 04:40 on Tuesday 27 October. TfL’s own bus notices describe the cause as a sinkhole.
TfL currently lists the closure until 23:00 on Monday 2 November. That is a planned end time, not a promise: the repair has to be dug out first, and the date may move either way.

Which buses are diverted
Six routes are on diversion. TfL’s first notices, issued at about 05:25, diverted them in both directions. New notices issued at about 11:15 say the diversions are northbound only, towards Bromley town centre. The earlier both-ways notices were still on TfL’s list this afternoon, so check southbound journeys too.
Stops not served northbound, as TfL lists them:
| Route | Stops missed |
|---|---|
| 61, 261, 320, 358 | Bromley Common / The Crown to Wendover Road |
| 208 (towards Lewisham) | Southborough Lane / Blackbrook Lane to Wendover Road |
| 336 | Hawthorne Road to Queens Gardens |

What it means for you
- Driving into Bromley from Bromley Common or Hayes: the A21 is shut northbound at Homesdale Road, so plan another way in. TfL’s record says traffic is flowing well on the diversion.
- Driving out of Bromley on the A21: you can still get through southbound, but in one lane, so expect queues at busy times.
- On the bus towards Bromley: if you normally board between Bromley Common and Wendover Road, you will need to walk to a stop outside the diverted section. Check before you travel, because TfL changed the notices once already today.
TfL’s record does not say which water company is carrying out the repair, and we could not read a utility incident notice for the site today. We will update this page when the road reopens or the end date changes.
There are more closures across the borough, including the Cray Avenue lane closure and temporary lights on Station Road in Orpington, on our Bromley roadworks and travel page.
