Orpington's High Street Post Office shuts on Wednesday 28 October. Post Office Ltd is still reading applications for a replacement. The nearest are a mile off.

Orpington Post Office will close on Wednesday 28 October 2026, and no replacement has been agreed. Post Office Ltd set out the date in an information letter dated 28 August, published on its own consultation hub and headed “Branch Unplanned Closure”.

The branch is at 189-193 High Street, BR6 0PF, inside the TG Jones store, about four miles east of Bromley town centre. Post Office Ltd’s own letter names two nearby alternatives and flags both as not fully covering passports, vehicle tax and travel money.

Post Office Ltd blames its retail partner. “As you may already be aware following the restructuring plan announcement by our retail partner TG Jones, some Post Office branches inside their stores will close,” the letter says. “Regrettably, Orpington Post Office branch is affected by this restructuring.”

No replacement branch is lined up

The letter does not promise a new branch. It says the company is “currently in the early stages of reviewing applications to run the Post Office branch” and will give a further update “as soon as possible”. It adds a condition: “it is important that any future service is sustainable for the person operating the service, and for Post Office Limited.”

There is no consultation to take part in. A footnote to the letter is blunt about what an unplanned closure means:

“Where the closure is unplanned, the service provision in the area will be reviewed based on current usage, modelling and availability of any suitable replacement or alternative service model. A commercial decision will be made if to actively seek to replace the closed service and will not be subject to public consultation.”

Comments can still be sent to the National Consultation Team at comments@postoffice.co.uk, but the company is not asking a question.

What Orpington does today that the alternatives do not

The Post Office’s own branch page for Orpington lists the full counter range, including personal and business banking, cash and cheque deposits, paper and digital passport Check & Send, DVLA photocard renewals, vehicle tax, SIA licence applications, document certification, in-branch identity verification, foreign currency, travel insurance and Western Union transfers. It opens 09:00 to 17:30, Monday to Saturday.

The closure letter names two alternatives, and is candid that they are not the same:

  • Ramsden Post Office, 35 Eldred Drive, BR5 4PE. Mon to Fri 09:30 to 17:30, Sat 09:30 to 16:00, closed Sunday. About a mile away.
  • Tile Farm Post Office, 2 Tile Farm Road, BR6 9RZ. Mon to Fri 08:00 to 18:00, Sat 08:00 to 16:00, closed Sunday. About a mile away.

Both, the letter says, offer “similar services however excluding a comprehensive range of Travel Money, Vehicle Tax, Passport Check & Send and On Demand Travel Insurance”. So the four things people most often travel into Orpington to do are the four things the two nearest branches are flagged as not fully covering.

Four new counters have opened in the borough, and none of them bank

While one full branch is closing, Post Office Ltd has notified four new “Drop & Collect” points across the borough since 12 August, all run with Payzone. Its own letters describe them as “one of our lighter, flexible branch formats” built for the parcels market, served “from a handheld device”.

  • Widmore Wine & Groceries, 169 Widmore Road, Bromley BR1 3AX. Opened Thursday 3 September, 13:00. Daily 06:00 to 21:00.
  • B&A Convenience Store, 77 Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley BR1 5AA. Opened Thursday 3 September, 13:00. Daily 10:00 to 22:00.
  • Queensway Local Store, 89 Queensway, Petts Wood BR5 1DQ. Opens Wednesday 9 September, 13:00. Mon to Sat 08:00 to 23:00, Sun 09:00 to 23:00.
  • Local Express, 330 Court Road, Orpington BR6 9DA. Opens Thursday 10 September, 13:00. Daily 06:30 to 23:00.

Each does three things: prepaid parcel collections and returns, bill payments and mobile top-ups. Each letter says the same sentence about the rest: “more complex services like personal and business banking will not be available at this branch.”

That is the shape of the change. Long hours and more places to hand over a parcel, in exchange for fewer places to pay in cash, renew a passport or tax a car.

The restructuring behind it

TG Jones is the former WH Smith high street business, sold by WH Smith plc in 2025 to Modella Capital and renamed. Companies House records the name change from WH Smith High Street Limited to TG Jones High Street Limited on 30 June 2025.

Its two main companies asked the High Court to sanction restructuring plans under Part 26A of the Companies Act 2006. Mr Justice Hildyard sanctioned them on 1 July 2026. His published summary of reasons records that:

  • the business “presently consists of 451 stores” and is “in serious financial distress”
  • the purpose of the plans is to avoid “collapsing into insolvent administration”
  • the plans work by “rationalising the leasehold estate to remove uneconomic stores”
  • unsecured creditors, including business rates owed to councils, “are to have the amounts owed to them sliced in half”

There is one line in that judgment that reads oddly from Orpington. Setting out why the turnaround might work, the judge quotes the chief executive on “a compelling ‘story’ to tell consumers with our focus on delivering improved retail experiences through the Post Office, Toys ‘R’ Us and Hobbycraft concessions”.

The Post Office concession is part of the plan’s case for survival. In Orpington it is a casualty of it.

TG Jones publishes no store closure list and its website could not be reached on 4 September, so we cannot confirm from the company whether the Orpington shop itself is closing or only the Post Office inside it. The closure date above is Post Office Ltd’s, from its own letter.

What it means for you

  • Do the counter jobs before 28 October if you can. Passport Check & Send, vehicle tax, travel money and travel insurance are the services the two nearest branches are flagged as not fully offering.
  • If you bank in cash at the Post Office, the four new Drop & Collect points will not help. They do parcels, bills and top-ups only. Ramsden and Tile Farm do banking.
  • Check hours before you travel. Orpington opens 09:00 to 17:30, Monday to Saturday. Both alternatives shut at 16:00 on a Saturday, and neither opens on a Sunday.
  • The Post Office’s branch finder is the live record. Its own letters tell customers to check there rather than rely on the printed list, because opening hours change.
