Free streets near 19 Bromley stations could get pay bays from 50p an hour, with a daily cap of up to £7. Check the full list of roads being looked at.

Free parking on streets near Bromley’s railway stations could end under plans going to councillors this month. Officers want to study new pay bays and other parking controls around 19 stations.

The minimum charge would be 50p an hour, with a daily maximum of up to £7 depending on the location. The plan is in a report to the Executive, which decides on Wednesday 25 November. The scrutiny committee discusses it on Tuesday 10 November.

This is a study, not a final decision

The Executive is being asked to authorise feasibility studies and detailed proposals. The report says approval “does not constitute approval to implement all locations”.

Three things are worth knowing about the list below:

  • It is not final. The report says it is not exhaustive, and more roads may be added.
  • Being listed does not mean a road gets pay bays. Some are included because parking could spread there and they may need other controls to protect residents.
  • It will take time. The studies are expected to take about 12 to 18 months. Any scheme then needs consultation and the usual legal process.

Why the council wants this

The report says many of these areas have few or no restrictions, so vehicles stay for long periods, often in residential streets. It says charges would manage commuter demand and free up space for residents, visitors and businesses.

The money is modest at first. The report expects:

  • 2027/28: no extra income
  • 2028/29: £30,000
  • 2029/30: £91,000

Setting up the scheme would cost an estimated £35,000.

The report gives two different lower limits for the daily cap. Its recommendation says £1 and its main text says 80p. Both give £7 as the top figure.

The same report proposes 26 per cent higher permit prices and higher parking charges from April 2027.

What it means for you

  • If your road is listed, nothing changes now. Expect a formal consultation if a scheme is drawn up for your area.
  • If you park free near a station to commute, this could change your costs, though not before the studies finish.
  • If your road is near a listed one, the report accepts that parking may move into surrounding streets, and says controls would need to address that.
  • To follow it, the committee papers are on the 10 November agenda. Current charges are in our parking in Bromley guide.
